After at least 3 weeks without any significant swell the Open, Ladies and Longboard divisions of the AIB/Laneez series round 4 were completed. A pulse of swell came through on the Sunday giving Jersey and Guernsey surfers a chance to gain valuable points for places in the Channel Island team.

Round 1 saw some high performance surfing by all competitors who made use of the low tide conditions executing snappy turns and critical re-entries. The Gould brothers, Piers and Renny, both powered their way through along with Christian Boletta, Scott Eastwood, Mark le Moignan, Guernsey’s Tom Hill, Mark Durbano and juniors Nathan Elms, Joe Baker and Freddie Seymour. Casualties of the 1st round were seeded surfers Ben Chapman and Sam George.

Round 2 saw junior Nathan Elms knock out the no 5 seed, Christian Boletta, and 20th seed Tom Hill only to face the on fire Piers Gould and master surfer Mark Durbano in semi final 1. This is where Elms’ good fortune ended as the senior surfers had the experience to overcome the junior threat.

Firefighter, Mark le Moingan, who has had an impressive competition record in 2009 breezed through the quarterfinal stages but faced tough opposition from Scott Eastwood in Semi final 2. Along with Renny Gould he was able navigate past Eastwood and into the final where they met Piers Gould and Mark Durbano.

The final showed some real class in the difficult high tide conditions. A slight backwash was causing afew problems but surfing standard remained high. Piers Gould caught a couple of walling rights executing high scoring manouveurs. Renny Gould sneaked in some lefthanders, again scoring highly. Not to be outdone, Durbano and le Moignan pushed the Gould brothers all the way in the 30min final but failed to connect onto a high scoring second wave. The end result being Renny Gould 1st, Piers Gould 2nd, Mark Durbano 3rd and Mark le Moignan 4th.

The Ladies saw some impressive surfing with Shelly McFarling stealing the show in the final pushed all the way by Arlene Maltman. Maltman a veteran at competitive surfing is beginning to show form at the right time of the series and managed to show her style on the high tide right-handers. Chantelle Coote unfortunately had to retire early in the final due to injury but was still able to secure a 3rd spot ahead of Esther Lempriere.

The Longboard division saw favourites Gordon Blake and Brad Jones knocked out in round 1 along with Peter Journeaux and Will Glenn. Invited visiting surfer and shaper ‘Chops’ Laschelles gave his entry up for eventual winner Dan Harris who again performed to the criteria pushing Joe Davies into 2nd, Andre le Geyt 3rd and Cole Jouanny 4th

Even with these results Sam George remains the current Open leader in the series with Scott Eastwood in second place, Mark le Moignan 3rd and Andre le Geyt in 4th. The Longboard division still sees Gordon Blake in the number 1 slot closely followed by Andre le Geyt, Will Glenn and Peter Journeaux. The ladies still have trials to run before all divisions including the Senior man and Masters compete in the final Euro qualifying event, the Deloitte Channel Island Championships that are to be held at the end of August.

Thanks for all the volunteer help over the weekend. Next scheduled contest is the DELOITTE CHANNEL ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS August bank holiday. Round 4 of senior man and masters TBA. Ladies trials TBA.  The Grandmasters TBA

KOTG Jersey 2009

Alex Vibert 15YRS takes KOTG crown in Jersey

A small onshore swell came through on Sunday afternoon giving  Quiksilver UK a chance to look at emerging talent in Jersey during the 50th anniversary year of the Jersey Surfboard club. Good turn out considering conditions with all divisions scrapping for the KOTG title. The under 16s was the showcase for the weather battered crowd and contest organisers, with outstanding performances from all the competitors. Alex Vibert, AIB Surfer of the year 2008, was able to perform in the small surf with some solid surfing executing at least 3 turns on every wave hotly pursued by Freddie Seymour. Nathan Elms struggled in the small conditions but was able to shrugg off the challenge of rising star Josh le Marquand.

The under 14s was dominated by Ben Bates who has won this event for the second time in this age group.

The under 12s, after a weeks training in France during half term put up a good display with both Hayden Bishop and Aaron Rowe getting some snappy turns in. Max Bennett 5yrs with help from mum, Jo, also showed solid control and was able to change direction which impressed the judges.

Thanks for the sponsor Quiksilver for laying on the event and for the Watersplash for all the catering.

Saltrock Open Croyde 2009

SALTROCK OPEN

CROYDE,DEVON 23/5/09

Nathan Elms reaches the final of the Saltrock Open under 16 division at Croyde over the weekend. Winning all his heats to lead up to his first UK Pro Tour final ever, Elms had a clear chance of winning. Elms started well by catching a long walling righthander. Powering off the bottom, Elms performed two critical snaps under the the lip, setting him up for the inside section which was lining up along the rocks at Down End point. Struggling with the backwash he performed a further two round house cutbacks to finish off his wave. This is where it went downhill for Elms as the Newquay duo of Tom Good and Leon Mansfield with Croyde local Beau Bromham began to notch up high scoring waves. Still having only a one wave score , Elms waited for another set wave to maximise his score . He eventually ran out of time and was pushed into 4th spot.

On reflection Elms said “ You have to get your waves in quick if you want to stand any chance of staying close to the UK lads. I just did’nt get a second wave and that put me in a massive disadvantage. I saw Leon Mansfield get an incredible left and get a 7.1. I was looking for an 8. It just did’nt come.”

Elms , part of a 5 man squad including Chantelle Coote, Bradley Ferguson, Matt Chapman and Freddie Seymour. Seymour reached the semi final of the under 16s and Matt Chapman managed to knock out Pro Junior favourites, Lyndon Wake and Seb Smart in the Round 1 of the Pro Junior Division. Ferguson had the unfortunate match up with Freddie Seymour in the quarter final stages of the under 16s along with eventual finalist Beau Bromham. Even with a clear strategy to block the UK competitors, Ferguson was 0.1 out of a semi final spot.

Chantelle Coote got a 3rd spot in her 1st Round of the under 16 Girls

Organisers were quick to praise the efforts of the Jersey Team which had certainly upset afew UK competitors and proved the Jersey under 16s can compete at this level.

This is the first of the UK PRO series. The next is the Gul Grommets in Newquay on the 14th June

Earth Wind and Water Surfabout 2009 16/17 May

RESULTS EARTH WIND AND WATER SURFABOUT 2009

WATERSPLASH 16TH/17TH MAY

Strong gale force winds mixed with a heavy swell added to the drama of the EWW Surfabout. Heavy rain showers impeded both surfers and judges vision for times during the weekend but all the division titles were completed. The strongest surfing were in the senior divisions with under 18 surfers braving a solid 4-6ft low tide shorebreak late on Saturday afternoon. The hazardous conditions also forced organisers to run the Novice division at le Braye on Sunday morning. The Longboard division encountered long paddle outs on the high tide at the Watersplash on Sunday with some competitors retiring early.

Performances were of a very high standard especially in the senior man division with Sam George’s domination continuing. Mark le Moignan and Scott Eastwood  displayed  real class in the Open Division and Nathan Elms in the under 18s was the big wave standout. Traditional and progressive manoeuvres from Gordon Blake and Dan Harris(Wales) in the Longboard Division gave a masterclass in competitive longboarding. Josh le Marquand was the only junior to reach the final in this divison and was highly commended by his  senior colleagues for ablility to battle against the elements but also get a spot in the final.

Andre le Geyt entered 4 categories  reaching 2 finals winning the Masters and gaining a 3rd spot in the Longboard which proved that his endurance fitness to be at a very high level.

The Ladies started their heats on Sunday and found conditions tough. Strong currents, driving rain and heavy swell  were encounted. Those that studied the conditions and state of tide had an advantage. Calculated surfing by Charlotte Bayliss saw her reach her first final of the season and sheer doggedness by Lucy Goddard in heat 1 saw her reach the final. Steady surfing by Chantelle Coote and Shelly McFarling saw them sail into the final as well with McFarling taking the honours, Bayliss 2nd, Coote 3rd and Goddard 4th.

The highly charged Novices were fully amped for the heats at le Braye on Sunday morning entering their first Surfabout competition. All surfed extremely well under the ever changing conditions . All will be receiving coaching from Kevin Olsen during half term in Hossegor, France.

AIB/LANEEZ Series round 2 2009 and POINTS TABLE

JERSEY SURFBOARD CLUB 2/5/09 WATERSPLASH

The AIB/Laneez Euroqualifier Round 2 for the shortboard divisions took place at the Watersplash over the weekend in some of the biggest surf seen at a contest for well over a decade. Solid 6ft-8ft waves pounded the bay all day Saturday turning the Open category into an endurance test for the competing surfers. Paddle out times were extended to 20mins with heats also being extended to 20mins. The juniors competing alongside the seniors struggled but managed to maintain their wavecount but the sheer power of the swell forced many to retire.

Senior surfers, Ben Chapman, Sam George, Scott Eastwood and airport firefighter, Mark le Moignan proved that superior fitness and big wave knowledge was the key to winning the early heats. As the swell began to peak near high-tide with some solid 8ft sets appearing over the horizon, contest organisers changed the format to a 6 man final lasting 45mins. Here, Mark Durbano and Andre le Geyt joined into the fray but it was Sam George who surfed to the judging criteria, executing perfect bottom to top turns vertically with snappy re-entries. Charging hard on the long walling rights was Andre le Geyt and Scott Eastwood. Both Le Geyt and Eastwood tried to maximise high scoring potential on the righthanders but Eastwood , after combining some smooth turns and cutbacks found himself stuck inside for  15mins struggling with walls of whitewater. This left him playing catch up for the remainder of the final. Le Moignan continued to surf well scoring on both rights and the lefts and seemed to be battling with Mark Durbano throughout the entire final. Ben Chapman who scored the highest scoring wave of the whole contest during his semifinal could not string together a 2 wave combo  to worry the other surfers. After a long and drawn out final, George took the honours, Le Geyt 2nd, Mark Durbano 3rd, Mark le Moignan 4th, Scott Eastwood 5th and Ben Chapman 6th.

Sunday saw the finals of the ladies, Masters(35+) and Senior man(28+). The swell which had dropped over night became a more manageable 3ft  making paddling out easier. Kicking off proceedings first were the Ladies with impressive performances from Shelly McFarling, Arlene maltman and Lucy Goddard. McFarling recently returned from Central America was keen to stamp her mark on the Ladies division. Picking up momentum in the early rounds, McFarling began to start charging in the final with some impressive turns leaving the other girls in her wake. Goddard, Maltman and Esther Lempriere chased hard but could not find the correct waves to surf . McFarling was 1st, Goddard 2nd, Matman 3rd and Lemprier 4th.

The Senior Man final was dominated by Sam George and Scott Eastwood with The current European masters champion, Clayton Lidster winning the Masters with a champions display of competitive surfing.

SURFERS EAR important information

Surfers Ear  What's that?
Surfer's ear is a condition of the ear canal where the bony lining under the skin develops a number of lumps (exostoses) that grow into the tube. This can eventually cause a partial or even complete blockage of the ear canal.

So what?
If the ear canal is narrowed water and debris can get trapped behind the narrowing causing a very painful infection which is difficult to treat. In very advanced cases it can narrow enough to cause deafness.

Then what?
Infections may require visits to the Ear Nose and Throat department at the hospital to have the ears cleaned out along with antibiotics.

Yes, but surely they can remove the blockage?
Well yes but... There is an operation where the surgeon digs a hole in the bone behind your ear and drills out the bony lumps. But this is a bit painful, carries the risk of complications and puts you out of the water for at least 2 months. And if you don't mend your ways it can come back again. Generally the operation is a bit of a last resort, although the surgeons like to do it before the canal is completely blocked. Its fearful reputation is perhaps not totally justified, and most complications and pain occur as a result of infection caused by premature return to the water. Nevertheless, "prevention is better than cure"

Is there anything I can do to stop it happening?
Surfer's ear is
six times as common in cold water surfers than warm water surfers. The longer you surf the more likely you are to get it. It is thought that it is caused by cold water and air getting into the ears repeatedly over a long period of time.

So if you can keep your ears warm and dry when surfing there is a good chance it won’t get nearly as bad. The usual way to do this is to wear earplugs.

What do you use as an earplug?
The ideal is something tailored to the ear that does not interfere too much with hearing and balance. but your ears need measuring to get the correct size. However they really do work.
